Lacey Waldrop went the distance without allowing an earned run, as Florida State avenged a weekend loss to 9th-ranked Nebraska.

An action-packed first week of the 2014 college softball season came to a close on Sunday, Feb. 9, with the slate of games scaled back a bit (several teams wrapped up on Saturday). There still were 34 games (four of them head-to-head) involving teams receiving votes in the preseason national polls, with the higher-ranked teams going 26-7-1.
It's interesting to note that, over the first four days of the season (Feb. 6-9), higher-ranked teams won 80 percent of the time in games involving ranked (or rev. votes) teams … and that rate was fairly consistent through each day (low of 78% and high of 84%):
• Feb. 6 – 14-3-1 (81%), record by higher-ranked teams
• Feb. 7 – 43-12 (78%)
• Feb. 8 – 52-10 (84%)
• Feb. 9 – 26-7-1 (78%)
• Week-1 overall: 135-32-2 (80%)
Purdue was the team of the day, coupling a 5-4 win over 10th-ranked Texas with a game vs. tournament host (13/15) Louisiana-Lafayette that ended 7-7, due to the pre-determined travel curfew. Sunday's other most noteworthy result was (15/12) Florida State's 5-1 win over 9th-ranked Nebraska (at New Mexico State), as FSU avenged a loss to the Huskers from earlier in the week.
(34/36) Notre Dame posted a 3-2, 8-inning win at (33/33) Auburn, one of several results on Sunday that involved teams outside the top-25. (4/3) Florida averted a Sunday upset, beating (31/30) Wisconsin 5-1 (at South Florida), and (18/16) Baylor wrapped up its slate of games at New Mexico State with a 5-0 win over (28/29) Arkansas).
The day's four other upsets came against teams near the bottom of those receiving votes: at Lipscomb 2-1 vs. (34/32) Virginia Tech … McNeese State 12-3 vs. (–/38) Syracuse (at South Alabama) … at Florida Gulf Coast 1-1 vs. (41/34) Western Kentucky … and Ohio Univ. 9-6 vs. (–/42) Iowa (at South Carolina).
