GAMEDAY RECAP PAGE – Saturday (Feb. 8, 2014)
Florida's Taylor Schwarz fashioned a strong opening weekend, including a key two-run home run in the Gators' thrilling extra-inning win over Michigan.

The college softball season got into full swing on Saturday, Feb. 8, with a huge slate of games including 62 involving teams that received votes in the national polls (among them Michigan and Notre Dame, which played their season openers). On the first two days of the season, higher-ranked teams won at a clip of 78% and that success rate bumped up to nearly 85% on Feb. 8 (when higher-ranked teams were 52-10). Among 10 head-to-head games between ranked (or rec. votes) teams, there were two upsets: (30/31) Tulsa 4-0 vs. (19/18) Louisvilla (at FAU) and (–/38) Syracuse 3-2 vs. (21/25) UAB (at South Alabama).
The game of the day played out at South Florida, as (4/3) Florida won a wild 8-inning game vs. (5/4) Michigan, 5-4, in a rare early-season top-5 matchup. 10th-ranked Texas beat tournament host (13/15) Louisiana-Lafayette for the second straight day, 7-3, but the Longhorns also were upset by Northern Iowa, 6-3 (UNI had two hits in the game, a pair of first-inning home runs that yielded a 6-0 lead). Creighton was a surprising 6-4 winner over 24th-ranked California (in Tempe, Ariz.) while North Dakota State won the "ND battle" vs. Notre Dame, 4-1 (at Auburn). On day after upsetting Louisville, Florida Atlantic posted a 1-0, eight-inning win over (30/31) Tulsa, and (16/31) UCLA won again over host (26/28) Hawaii, this time in the 4-1 tournament final.
Saturday's five other head-to-head results between ranked (or rec. votes) teams broke down as follows:

• (5/4) Michigan 3-2 at (25/23) South Florida
• (8/8) Oregon 5-0 vs. (32/27) North Carolina State (Tempe, AZ)

• at (20/22) South Alabama 8-0 vs. (–/38) Syracuse (5 inn.)
In addition to various results already mentioned above, there were four other upsets involving teams receiving votes in the preseason national polls: Kent State 3-2 at (34–) Long Beach State … Texas-Arlington 3-2 vs. (38/–) BYU (St. George, UT) … Colorado State 3-2 vs. (39/35) Oregon State (8 inn.; Tempe, AZ) … and at Florida Gulf Coast 3-2 vs. (41/34) Western Kentucky.
